DIY Summer Accessories

By Alexia Gonzalez on May 20, 2015

Ah, yes summer summertime! Tis’ the season when the living is easy and the weather is oh so breezy. This is the time to unwind after a hectic spring semester, and relax before taking on another year of academic chaos.

Summer is the perfect time to catch up on some of our favorite hobbies and nostalgic past times. Whether you have a few days or a few weeks off, you should take this opportunity to relax in a productive way.

Whether it’s reading a novel or two, painting some of the scenic sunny skyline, or crafting a project from scratch, there is no denying the rejuvenating properties that come from taking some time to do something just for yourself.

Life is always that much better when you come across a clever little do-it-yourself idea that produces something fantastic. So why not take this time to craft up something adorable that you can incorporate into your chic summer wardrobe?

Creating accessories for your outfits should always be high up on the list of popular projects. Although some of us may be lucky enough to have some spare time for larger projects, I know that’s not the case for every gal. However, a shortage of time does not necessarily mean that all DIY projects are impossible to take on.

There is nothing more rewarding than starting a project from the ground up and watching it result in something unique and beautiful and all your own.

So when you find yourself with a spare moment on hand, try taking on one of these adorable DIY projects to incorporate into your favorite summer outfits. Not to mention that no one else will be able to mimic a look that is entirely crafted by you.

Rainbow Wrap Bangles

These bracelets add a fun dose of color to any ensemble and are a great way to make use of those old bangles that you have lying around your jewelry box. If you already make use of your bangles, you can pick some up at your local thrift store or accessory shop for next to nothing.

You will also need some bright colored thread and some super strong adhesive. Finally you just need some metal split rings and charms to accessorize with (you can also purchase pre-painted charms for even more color).

To begin, put a small amount of adhesive on one spot on a bangle. Then attach one end of the colored thread to it, and wind it around the bangle until you have covered the whole area and you have worked your way back to your starting point.

Add another dab of glue to the bangle and stick the other end of the thread to it, then cut off any excess. Leave the glue to dry for an hour and then attach the split rings using pliers. Attach enough rings to use for your charms and leave some empty for added ornamentation.

Embellished Sunglasses

No matter where summer takes you, a new pair of sunglasses is the must have accessory!

This summer DIY fashion idea will make you stand out from the crowd and show off your personal style. You won’t want to hide in the shade when you’re rocking a pair of DIY embellished sunglasses.

All that you need is an inexpensive pair of colored shades and some rhinestones or fun decorative flowers or hearts (all can be purchased at your local crafts store). Determine a design before you get to glueing–you can go for a blinded out, multi colored, or ombre look–and get to decorating!

Funky Summer Hat

Crown your warm weather wardrobe this season with a fab accessory that will leave your maxi dress in the shadows. In a good way. Perfect for all those warm weather parties that you’ll be taking off to, a fun hat is versatile enough to wear to any summer shindig and never fails to make a statement.

The possibilities are endless when you pair a floppy oversized hat with some creative flexibility, but my personal favorite has to be this floppy donut hat that will be sure to make you the life of any party.

All that you’ll need is a plain straw floppy hat (the bigger the better), some paint brushes, and some fabric craft paint in a base frosting color and a few sprinkle colors. To begin, paint the rim of your hat using your frosting color (opt for a soft pastel pink or mint green), leaving a small border around the edge. You’ll want to do your best to get an even coat without going too too heavy on the paint.

Make sure you do this on a protected surface as depending on your hat and your paint, a tiny bit of paint can seep through the straw. Let dry.

Freehand paint your sprinkles all over the hat. I like to start with one color, placing it in various spots around the donut and then move to the next, so on and so on. Let dry. Done!

Floral Hair Accessories
Not only have floral hair accessories become somewhat of a spring/summer staple for embellishing your locks, they are super simple to make and incredibly versatile. These ultra feminine pieces perfectly complement those salt kissed post-beach waves that we all lust for.

Whether you prefer a daisy crown, a rose lined head band, or a flowery bun wrap, the possibilities are endless.

Flower hair accessories can be simple and made out of one type of flower, or ornate and full of color and flora. All that you need is bendable covered wire, some faux flowers, and a glue gun to craft the perfect garden fairy flower crown.
If you’re looking for a more simple floral approach, try making this flower band, that is perfect to wrap around a messy bun. Simply glue your fave flowers onto a suede lace the same color of your hair, wrap it around your bun or ponytail and you’re good to go.
