Back-To-School Events To Host For Your Student Residents

By Francine Fluetsch on August 27, 2016

If you are a property manager and are trying to rack your brain for events to do for your student residents, why not consider a back to school theme? Most students are already back on the grind and are already stressed out, so some community bonding might do them some good.

Here are some ideas to get you started, and to really give you an “in” with your residents.

What’s a great way to de-stess? Eating comfort food, of course! You could ask each resident to bring their favorite comfort food dish to share with the community. This is a great way for everyone to bond because they can share dishes, complain about the stress of school together, and get to know you more.

Making it a potluck takes some stress off of you in thinking up what foods to bring, and you’ll all be having a good time and filling your bellies before you know it.

College students are always in when there is free food involved, especially if you emphasize that the theme is comfort food. Bring to-go containers so everyone can take a little bit home to save for later.

Resident movie night:

Back to school means that students don’t have that much free time and they feel like all the fun is being sucked out of their lives, so why not help put some back in? It could be a fun idea to have a movie night outside with a projector and a large sheet to watch it on.

Maybe you can have all the residents vote on the movie and what day would work best, and you can all watch it together. If there are snacks and it’s a good movie, the students will show up for sure! A comedy would probably be best to help them forget about school for a little bit, have some good laughs, and have a good time.

Resident breakfast:

Many students just have cereal for breakfast out of convenience, so why not throw a breakfast event where they can have something hot for a change and mingle with you and their fellow residents? Everyone loves breakfast food, especially if it’s free, so bring the coffee and the pancakes and the residents will be swarming.

Maybe you could have it go from 8 to 11 a.m., so that students can stop by before their early class or even after it’s finished. They will really appreciate you setting up a meal for them.

Textbook/supply exchange:

To keep with the back-to-school theme, maybe you can help them out by hosting a “get ready for school” event. You can invite them to bring old textbooks and such that they won’t be needing anymore to exchange with others, and can maybe provide them with some notebooks, pens and pencils, and little things like that.

This will help save the residents some money and will let them bond over getting back in the swing of things together.

Resident hike:

Students often forget how much exercise helps in relieving stress, so why not take them on a local hike? It will be a great way for everyone to get outside and get active, and hikes are great ways for everyone to bond and get to know one another more. Look up some hikes near you and find one that would be fun but not too hard, so it can include everyone!

21+ event:

If you know that your residents are all of age, why not host a mixer with some alcohol to help them de-stress after starting school and surviving their first week? Don’t worry, they won’t get too crazy since they know that you will be there, but your cool factor will go up a lot and they will trust you more as well.

You can also have non-alcoholic beverages for those who don’t drink, and make it a short but social event that they will be telling all of their friends about.

Resident barbecue:

There is something about a barbecue that is just so relaxing. It will make your student community feel at home and taken care of for a night, which they will really appreciate. Barbecues are laid back, so you don’t really have to stress about it either. Pump some good tunes, make sure you have some veggie burgers along with the regular ones, and everyone will have a grand old time.

These are just a few ideas that you can try out when hosting an event or two for your student residents. Having them bond with one another and yourself makes for a better living environment, shows them that you care, and will lead them to recommend your place to their friends, which would be in your favor. Keep it quick and fun, and if food is involved, you are guaranteed to have a good turnout.
